lyrics

i heard you swindled that money you took to the city
guilty on your mother's hymns
prosaic in nature, you never question beauty
but you smiled when you saw your friends
went to central park and dreamt you were a movie star,
woke up in a hospital bed
well you can plunder the sunlight
and wear it like it loves you,
but who are you trying to convince?

it is what it is
no backwards logic
just the truth and the fear of it
weighing on your pride
look smug if you'd like,
but what could be
more obvious than this?

when you were young, repercussions were fair
and supple as your worn-out shoes
but now your reputation is a petty contract,
it's partial like a point of view
the day moves swiftly, tomorrow's insisting
on a transient approach to renew
so you can hide your knowledge in the fundamentals,
but the margins always come after you

a clean slate looks cunning
in your nihilistic love for nothing
that destroyed any shame or proof
there's reasons for the things you do
so you don't even sweat it
and what could be
easier than this?

it's hard to say when exactly
you lost your sense
of any rational purpose in all of this,
i know we never heard the end of it
when the world sabotaged your happiness

well it's a lot to manage when you're trying to balance
all your plans that never came to be
and those expectations you thought you'd live up to
like that pile of magazines
i know you try to ignore it, covered in bruises,
another day in long sleeves
but why is he so angry?
come on, you know you can tell me
come on and just tell me

why nothing is quite like it seems
you'll spend your whole life
trying to feel worthy
until you finally accept
that it's always been
your family and friends
who have loved you for no reason
and what could be
better than this?
